Week 10: I survived my first TYPHOON!

September 17, 2018

So the news was right, we experienced a typhoon in our area and i think since Wednesday we were preparing and missionaries were getting evacuated for this storm. 3 sisters in the area next to us were evacuated to our house and so for about 5 days we had 5 sisters in a tiny small house with one small tiny bathroom! So when the storm hit Friday night around midnight me, Sister Despain (from Oregon) and sister Langi (from New Zealand) were all just wide awake because this was the first time for us to experience a typhoon! The two other sisters were Filipino and had experienced typhoons before and actually my companion slept through the who thing! But for about 3 hours us three sisters were wide awake listening to what sounded like buckets of water being thrown at our house and the wind that sounded like it could rip off our roof! But through the whole thing we were safe in our apartment! In preparation for the typhoon we had to acquire food and water for a week and so we were all prepare with snacks for days! We had water the whole time, but for two days we didn't have power and so that meant no fans and our area is one of the hottest areas in our mission! So Saturday we were told we couldn't leave our house and so it was so strange as a missionary to have a day that we didn't leave our house! Experiencing a typhoon in the Philippines is so different because no one was really preparing for the storm until Friday (which was the day it started) and that just was so crazy to me. People were so calm and they all acted like this was a normal thing, which they happen a lot so i guess they are used to them. The church was full of families and their stuff who were evacuated from their homes, and the atmosphere was so light and calm considering that their homes may be destroyed form this storm. When we were able to leave our house it was so crazy to just see all the flooding in the lower parts of the area and to see all the trees that had fallen. But if anything i have learned from being here is that the Filipinos know how to take care of themselves! And then the next day after the storm, Sunday, everyone acted as if nothing had just happened! We still had all three hours of church and some families had to get ready at church, but life just went back to normal for everyone! Later Sunday we went and taught some members and one sisters roof was completely ripped off of her house and while we were there she was still so happy and wanted to hear what we had to teach her! The people here really know how to be happy through the hard trials in life!
Throughout the whole experience i definaltey felt God protecting us and while we were in our house us sisters talked about how there were probably angles surrounding our house protecting us, and thinking about all those loved ones who have passed on and were there with us, it brought so much comfort through a scary time.
But know that we are all safe and good now!
I love you all and I definatley felt all the extra prayers this week. Have a great week and don't forget to serve someone this week! Even if it may just be smiling to a stranger at the store! Love you all!!!!

-I tried a fruit that I had never had before and I already forgot the name of it!

-on Sunday sister Mosiah (an 18 yr old girl from our ward) came teaching with us, and a member who owns a tricycle (who drove us to our teaching appointments), and one of the young men came too to help us teach! It was one big party in the tricycle!

-This is the view from our window of our house after the typhoon and you can see the flooding and fallen trees from after the storm.

-We went to a new area for me and wow was it so pretty with the blue sky, green trees and corn fields!
